Se trata del Campeón Polaco de esta edición de 2023, Tomasz Preuss, que también es el Campeón del Mundo en su edición de 2017, justo el año en que Pere Vives ganó el Campeonato de España, el precursor de Carcassonne.Cat junto a otros compañeros y amigos de Cataluña, sobre todo del Club Amatent.
It is about the Polish Champion, Thomasz Preuss, who is also the World Champion in its 2017 edition, just the year that Pere Vives won the Spanish Championship, the precursor of Carcassonne.Cat along with other colleagues and friends from Catalonia, especially from Club Amatent.

Pero Tomasz quedó también cuarto clasificado el año en que Genro Fujimoto se proclamó vencedor, en 2018.

Y también ocupó la tercera plaza del Mundial de Carcassonne en 2021, año en que se coronó Maciej Polak, su compatriota.

Además, es uno de los mejores jugadores online. De hecho, justo antes de hacerle la entrevista ocupaba la cuarta posición del ránking ELO de la Board Game Arena con 757 puntos.

Joaquín: Querido Tomasz, bienvenido al Blog “Carcassonne Connection”. ¿Cómo estás?

Hello! I’m doing well, thank you for having me.
Joaquín: Queria preguntarte antes que nada por tu nick: UY_Scuti. ¿Qué significado tiene?
I wanted to ask you first of all about your nickname: UY_Scuti. What does it mean?
Tomasz Preuss: UY_Scuti debe su nombre a la mayor estrella conocida, al menos cuando creé mi cuenta. Es 1.700 veces más grande que el Sol. Me encantan los datos interesantes sobre nuestro mundo, pero me fascina especialmente el espacio.
UY_Scuti is named after the biggest known star, at least when I made my account. It is a staggering 1,700 times larger than the Sun. I’m a fan of interesting facts about our world, but I’m especially fascinated by space.
Joaquín: Veamos… has participado en el Campeonato del Mundo de Carcassonne con cierta frecuencia en estos últimos años. ¿Pero desde cuándo juegas a este maravilloso pasatiempo de las 72 losetas?
Let’s see, you have participated in the Carcassonne World Championship quite often in recent years, but since when have you been playing this wonderful pastime of 72 tiles?
Tomasz Preuss: En realidad juego desde diciembre de 2013. He tenido la suerte de participar muchas veces en el Campeonato del Mundo. Esta será mi octava participación, y desde 2014 hasta 2021, he participado en todas las ediciones.
I’ve actually been playing since December 2013. I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in the World Championships many times. This will be my 8th appearance, and from 2014 to 2021, I took part in every edition.
Joaquín: He visto que tienes una cuenta en Board Game Arena desde 2014: no solo juegas a Carcassonne…me he dado cuenta de que eres bueno jugando a “Libertalia”, “Azul”, “Terra Mytica”, “Wingspam”, etc.
I noticed that you have an account on Board Game Arena since 2014: you don’t only play Carcassonne…I noticed that you are good at playing “Libertalia”, “Azul”, “Terra Mystica”, “Wingspam”, etc.
Tomasz Preuss: Sí, me gusta jugar a una gran variedad de juegos de mesa. Cada juego presenta retos únicos, y disfruto con los aspectos estratégicos de dominar diferentes juegos.
Yes, I enjoy playing a variety of board games. Each game presents unique challenges, and I enjoy the strategic aspects of mastering different games.
Joaquín: ¿Cómo se llega a conseguir un buen nivel en un juego y luego en otro, y otro, y otro…?
How do you get to a good level in one game and then another, and another, and another…?
Tomasz Preuss: Creo que es fundamental comprender las reglas y estrategias básicas de un juego. Una vez que se comprenden bien los fundamentos, se puede utilizar un pensamiento estratégico similar en varios juegos. Para mejorar hay que practicar y aprender de los errores.
I think it’s crucial to grasp the basic rules and strategies of a game. Once you have a good understanding of the fundamentals, you can use similar strategic thinking in various games. Getting better comes from practice, learning from your errors.
Joaquín: ¿Qué te ha llevado a hacer tan longeva tu experiencia en Carcassonne, en especial este invento de Klaus que es en el que más tiempo inviertes?
What has led you to make your Carcassonne experience so long-lived, and is this invention of Klaus so special that you invest the most time in it?
Tomasz Preuss: Me gustan la competición y los retos, y este juego, gracias a su popularidad, proporciona ambas cosas. Es un ciclo que se autoperpetúa.
I enjoy competition and challenges, and this game, thanks to its popularity, provides both. It’s a self-perpetuating cycle.
Joaquín: Cuéntanos tu experiencia de este año en el Campeonato Nacional de Polonia, comparada con las ediciones precedentes, que te han dado la oportunidad de viajar a Alemania.
Tell us about your experience at this year’s Polish National Championships, compared to the previous editions that have given you the opportunity to travel to Germany.
Tomasz Preuss: El nivel de juego en Polonia ha mejorado considerablemente, lo que convierte el campeonato nacional en un acontecimiento exigente. Por primera vez jugamos en un sistema similar al del campeonato del mundo, con la diferencia de que los 16 primeros pasaban a Playoff y las semifinales y la final eran al mejor de 3 partidas. En la fase suiza, tuve un comienzo un poco duro, ya que perdí dos encuentros, aunque conseguí derrotar al defensor del título y avanzar hasta el 12º puesto. Sin embargo, en la fase eliminatoria, gané todas mis partidas, terminando el torneo con 9 victorias y 2 derrotas.
The level of play in Poland has significantly improved, making the national championship a challenging event. For the first time we played in a system similar to the world championship system, with the difference that the Top 16 advanced to play-off and the semi-finals and final were best of 3. In the swiss stage, I had a bit of a rough start as I lost two matches, even though I managed to defeat the defending champion and advance from 12th place. However, in the knockout stage, I won all my games, finishing the tournament with 9 wins and 2 losses.
Joaquín: Sabemos que Maciej Polak no viajó a Alemania en la edición de 2022 debido a que no se podía permitir el coste del viaje y la estancia a tierras alemanas. Es curioso observar que nadie sufraga los gastos al Campeón del Mundo para que esté presente en el Mundial. Pero también sucede esto con otros países de Europa del Este y de otras zonas del mundo. ¿Cuál es tu opinión al respecto?
We know that Maciej Polak did not travel to Germany for the 2022 edition because he could not afford the cost of travel and stay in Germany. It is curious to see that nobody pays for the World Champion to be present at the World Cup. But this is also the case for other countries in Eastern Europe and other parts of the world about the participants, in general. What is your opinion on this?
Tomasz Preuss: Creo que es crucial que la comunidad y los organizadores estudien formas de apoyar a los jugadores, especialmente a los campeones, para garantizar su participación en torneos tan prestigiosos. El tema de las finanzas siempre es complicado. Entiendo que Spielezentrum organiza el campeonato, no Hans im Glück, pero me parece que no debería ser un obstáculo tan grande para una editorial tan importante. Como campeón del mundo del juego Klask, recibí todo el apoyo financiero de la principal editorial.
I believe it’s crucial for the community and organizers to explore ways to support players, especially champions, to ensure their participation in such prestigious tournaments. The topic of finances is always a challenging one. I understand that Spielezentrum organizes the championship, not Hans im Glück, but it seems to me that it shouldn’t be such a hurdle for a prominent publishing house. As the World Champion in the Klask game, I received full financial support from the main publishing house.
Joaquín: Expectativas para esta edición 2023: ¿viajas para ganar el torneo? ¿O para ti es más importante el hecho de participar y encontrarte con todos esos jugadores de gran nivel internacional?
Expectations for the 2023 edition: are you travelling to win the tournament, or is it more important for you to participate and meet all these top international players?
Tomasz Preuss: Para la edición de 2023, mi principal objetivo es dar lo mejor de mí y disfrutar de la experiencia de jugar contra los mejores jugadores internacionales. Soy un jugador realizado. Antes mi objetivo era ganar ese maldito trofeo de madera, sin importar el puesto, ahora tengo tres 😉
For the 2023 edition, my main goal is to give it my best shot and enjoy the experience of playing against top international players. I am a fulfilled player. Once my goal was to win that darned wooden trophy, no matter for which place, now I have three 😉
Joaquín: Tomasz, al igual que a otros jugadores, quiero preguntarte por algún consejo para mejorar el juego en Carcassonne.
Tomasz, like other players, I would like to ask you for some advice on how to improve your Carcassonne game.
Tomasz Preuss: Aunque no hay una receta sencilla, en mi opinión, lo más importante es aprender de los errores y analizar las partidas perdidas. Hubo veces en las que, tras una dura derrota, incluso soñaba con los errores y con lo que podría haber hecho mejor.
While there’s no simple recipe, in my opinion, the most important thing is to learn from your mistakes and analyze your losing games. There were times when, after a tough defeat, I even had dreams about the mistakes and what I could have done better.
Joaquín: En “The Book of Carcassonne” contaste algunos criterios de perfeccionamiento relacionados con los siguientes conceptos: conocer técnicas para contar las losetas restantes durante la partida, analizar las propias partidas para recordar cuales han sido tus errores (y soñar con ellos), siempre que juegues…hacerlo al 100% (es decir, estar concentrado) de lo contrario estarías perdiendo el tiempo, intentar enfrentarte a aquellos jugadores que sean mejores que tú con la idea de aprender estilos y técnica nuevas.
In “The Book of Carcassonne” you told some criteria for improvement related to the following concepts: know techniques to count the remaining tiles during the game, analyse your own games to remember what your mistakes have been (and dream about them), whenever you play…do it 100% (to be concentrated) otherwise you are wasting your time, try to play against those players who are better than you with the idea to learn new styles and techniques.
Tomasz Preuss: Sí, fue hace unos años, y estos son algunos principios generales, pero los sigo manteniendo. Ha sido un placer poder ayudar, aunque sea en tan pequeña medida, en la redacción de este libro. Aprovecho la ocasión para enviar un saludo a Dan.
Yes, it was a few years ago, and these are some general principles, but I still stand by them. It was a pleasure to be able to help, even in such a small way, with the writing of this book. Taking the opportunity, I send greetings to Dan.
Joaquín: Al final de tu interlocución, en el libro dices algo a Steve Dee que para mí condensa la respuesta que busco cuando pregunto qué tiene un maestro en Carcassonne que no tenga un jugador experto. Y dices: “un buen jugador conoce todas las losetas, las cuenta y domina algunas técnicas del juego; un gran jugador sabe cómo utilizar ese conocimiento”. Esta frase suena a un proverbio de sabiduría.
At the end of your interlocution, you say something to Steve Dee that for me condenses the answer I am looking for when I ask “what a master has in Carcassonne that an expert player doesn’t have”. And you say: “a good player knows all the tiles and counts some of them and knows some techniques. A great player knows what to do with this knowledge”. This phrase sounds like a proverb of wisdom.
Tomasz Preuss: La verdad es que me salió bastante bien, supongo que debería pensar en un librito de aforismos de Carcassonne (broma). La verdadera maestría va más allá de la lógica: había que tener suerte en el momento oportuno y saber aprovecharla.
I actually did quite well with that , I guess I should think about a little booklet of Carcassonne aphorisms (joke). True mastery goes beyond logic; you had to be lucky at the right moment and know how to capitalize on it.
Joaquín: El equipo nacional de Polonia ha conseguido buenos resultados en sus dos primeras participaciones en el WTCOC. El año pasado no os inscribisteis como repulsa a los acontecimientos que estaban sucediendo en Ucrania y por solidaridad con la selección ucraniana, que no podría presentarse al Mundial por equipos. Pero este año Polonia y Ucrania han vuelto, sin obtener grandes resultados. Pero lo importante es que han regresado. Pero Tomasz no ha jugado. ¿Cuál ha sido el motivo?
The Polish national team has achieved good results in its first two participations in the WTCOC. Last year you did not register as a protest against the events in Ukraine and out of solidarity with the Ukrainian national team, which could not participate in the World Team Championships. But this year Poland and Ukraine have returned, without obtaining great results. But the important thing is that they are back. But Tomasz, you didn’t play, what was the reason?
Tomasz Preuss: Actualmente tenemos problemas internos en el equipo de los que no quiero hablar. Espero poder volver en la ETCOC.
We currently have internal problems in the team that I don’t want to talk about. I hope that I will be able to return to the European Championships.
Joaquín: No te quiero importunar más, pero cuéntanos algo que no sepamos de ti o alguna anécdota sobre toda tu experiencia en el juego de Carcassonne.
I don’t want to bother you any more, but tell us something we don’t know about you or some anecdotes about your whole experience in the game of Carcassonne.
Tomasz Preuss: No sé qué más no sabéis de mí. ¿Quizás que me gusta hacer bromas (irónicas a más no poder)? Un hecho interesante que se me ocurrió es que en 2018, Thomas Moder perdió los planos para hacer el trofeo de la Copa del Mundo y me pidió que no lo dimensionara, cosa que hice, así que desde 2018, los trofeos se han hecho según mi diseño.
I don’t know what else you don’t know about me. Maybe that I enjoy doing jokes (ironic to)? An interesting fact that came to my mind is that in 2018, Thomas Moder lost the plans for making the World Cup trophy and asked me not to dimension it, which I did, so since 2018, the trophies have been made according to my design.
